I had a dream that you were there
Trying to catch and hold my attention the way you used to.
Trying to flatter me into sacrificing
the part of myself that knows better.
You knew exactly what I wanted to hear and
you made me believe you meant it, too.
We laid there, with you across from me, like we used to
You were back lit by the sun, just a silhouette, and I couldn't discern your features.
It was alluring, for a moment -
the soft light around your shape -
until lucidity scratched at the surface and I realized
the shape blocking the light...
was you.
The way my gut twisted then, the way I wanted to recoil from your hand,
the way my mind wanted to shift away to another time, another place -
My body had finally purged itself of your touch.
Your sunny halo blinded me for a while,
But as the sun set I was finally able to see you as you are.
It went dark, and you disappeared,
And I was glad.
